Context
According to INEGI (2024), Veracruz ranks second nationwide in childhood cancer incidence, following Mexico State, and is among the states with the highest mortality rates from this disease. Data from the Veracruz Children's Hospital (2023) indicate that 50% of registered cases at the hospital result in death due to cancer. Additionally, 60% of pediatric patients pass away at home (INEGI, 2022).
The most common forms of childhood cancer include leukemia, followed by lymphomas and solid tumors, with a 65% increase in cases following the COVID-19 pandemic. Most diagnoses come from rural areas, where environmental factors, such as exposure to agrochemicals in agricultural and industrial zones in the southern region of the state—including Coatzacoalcos and Los Tuxtlas—play a determining role (AMANC, 2022).
In response to this crisis, Casa Colibrí is expanding to Veracruz with the goal of providing specialized palliative care to patients and families battling cancer. Our mission is to improve their quality of life through a range of medical, psychological, and social support services, including loan of medical equipment, access to medication and medical supplies, transportation assistance, nutritional support, funeral assistance, among others.
Project
2025-2026
We are currently in the process of securing a property to establish the new Casa Colibrí Veracruz (Hummingbird House Veracruz) , which will begin operations in the short term and provide the same comprehensive services as our Mexico City headquarters.
To ensure its success, we have developed a care and sustainability model designed to reach full operational capacity by early 2026. This model is backed by our proven experience in Mexico City, allowing us to replicate it with confidence and security, reinforcing our credibility with donors and institutions.
Key Elements of This Model:
-
Local Staff and Volunteers. Having local personnel and volunteers who understand the social, cultural, and economic dynamics of the region is an invaluable asset. Their knowledge of the local context enables effective adaptation of care strategies, ensuring a significant impact on patients and their families.
-
Strategic Partnerships with DIF Veracruz and Local Hospitals. We have established partnerships with DIF Veracruz and local hospitals, which are essential to ensuring patient access and strengthening institutional support. These collaborations enhance the credibility of the project and ensure the continuity of care.
-
Technology for Evaluation and Monitoring. The integration of technological tools and software for evaluation and monitoring enhances efficiency and transparency. This enables data-driven decision-making and optimizes available resources.
-
Specialized Palliative Care Medical Team. A qualified local medical team, trained in palliative care, ensures specialized attention and guarantees the long-term sustainability of services. Their involvement strengthens the quality and reach of patient care.
-
Institutional Policy and Procedure Manuals. Well-defined operational guidelines are essential for successfully replicating the Casa Colibrí model in Veracruz. These protocols standardize processes and ensure the delivery of high-quality services.
-
Strategic Donor Partnerships. Long-standing partnerships with donors who trust our work provide a solid financial foundation for the project. Their support not only ensures continuous funding but also fosters new donor engagement, reinforcing the program’s long-term sustainability.
